Steel Doors

Steel Doors

Steel doors remain the choice of most homeowners. These doors consist of heavy gauge galvanized steel skins separated by high density foam.

What Is A Steel Door?

A steel door is not the same as a solid steel door. Steel doors are made out of a polyurethane or polystyrene core with a steel skin on top.

A solid steel door would be too heavy to open and would most certainly rip the hinges out. The skin of the door is made of steel that is between 16 and 24 gauge.

The door’s perimeter is surrounded by a wood frame called a stile. On the margins of the door, there is no apparent polyurethane or polystyrene.

Aside from the weight issue, steel and most metals are excellent heat and cold conductors. Thermodynamic conduction is not a desirable feature in a door. The thermal barrier is provided by the polyurethane or polystyrene core.

According to studies, some of these synthetic materials may block unwanted heat and cold up to five times better than wood doors.
